Synopsis
In Mexico, a lawyer receives an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss retire and disappear forever. She will become the woman she always dreamed of being. El Trio Written by Camille, Clément Ducol and Jacques Audiard Performed by Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana. My second favorite film from Cannes "The Substance" (I didn’t see "Anora).
It’s pure madness
A musical about drug dealers and corruption in Mexico??? WTF???”Emilia Perez”; is really resourceful. It combines many different genres: drama, comedy, musical, thriller, but it does it in a very good and entertaining way. It is also very original and also surprisingly emotional. Here is a character who has a moving and heartbreaking journey throughout the film. I won’t go into details. It’s not really a spoiler because it was revealed in the first 15-20 minutes of the movie, but I didn’t know that and was shocked that this movie went that way.
Gascon plays the main character
That’s why we recommend that you don’t read the description and go see it completely blind if you want the best possible experience. The best here is "Emilia Perez" are definitely performances. It won Best Actress at Cannes for up to 4 performances (Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz). Saldana plays the main character and has a lot of intense and spectacular scenes (especially the musical ones). I’m glad that after all these blockbuster hits, she finally got a role where she could show her acting chops. It’s kind of a supporting role, but he’s the heart of the movie and the whole plot happens around him. Gomez and Paz were good, but I’m surprised they also won the Palme – their performances weren’t as great and memorable as the vision of Saldana and Gascon’s Jacques Audiard.
bold and impressive
This movie is stylish and looks beautiful. I love the cinematography and the score. Not everything works perfectly, and there were moments where I wasn’t completely sold on this, but most of the time I enjoyed it and was blown away by its craziness, ingenuity, and originality. I’m not a big fan of musicals, but the musical scenes in the film (of which there aren’t many) are engaging and very well choreographed & a shot that makes them enjoyable to watch. The songs are catchy and memorable (my favorites are vaginoplasty and the taste of Cola)."Emilia Perez" is not for everyone. Some people walked out, some said it was one of the worst films of the festival, some loved it (myself included). The general public doesn’t like this.
Let’s support weird and niche cinema
The closest movie I’ve seen to this is "Annette" Author: Leos Carax "Emilia Perez" is more crowd-pleasing, but it still misses many people. But I still encourage you to see it. See the entire fall program of the 62nd New York Film Festival.
